Target Practice

Practice the exact shots and cue-ball positions you want to improve.

Choose a shot, pocket the object ball, and send the cue ball toward a designated target. Then use filters to concentrate on the distances, cut angles, spin, and position challenges that matter to you.

Target Practice projected on a pool table: cue ball and object ball positions, the track line, and the T1 target zone

Why it matters

Most players know which shots give them trouble: a thin cut, a long straight-in shot, a stun shot that has to stop in the right place. Setting those up by hand, again and again, takes time away from shooting them.

Target Practice lets you pick the kind of shot you want and shows exactly where the cue ball needs to finish, so a practice session can go straight to the shots you want to improve.

How it works

  1. Cue ball, object ball, pocket

Each layout shows where to place the cue ball and object ball and which pocket to play.

  2. A target for the cue ball

A target zone shows where the cue ball needs to land. Layouts use 9 target positions, with an optional 21-target setting for finer position work.

  3. Filter to the shots you want

Narrow the layouts by cue-ball-to-object-ball distance, object-ball-to-pocket distance, cut angle, and pocket.

  4. See one way to play it

Solution layouts add an Aiming Ball and track line showing the tip position, speed, and cue-ball path for one way to make the shot and get the leave.

  • Base layouts

Target Practice base layout: cue ball, object ball, pocket line, and a numbered target zone
A base layout: the shot and the target, with no cueing shown.

Over 1,800 base layouts are the foundation of Target Practice: 204 ball and pocket positions, each with 9 targets. Each one describes the ball you have to pocket and where the cue ball must land.

  • Solution layouts

Target Practice solution layout with an Aiming Ball, speed indicator, and multi-rail track line to the target
A solution layout, showing cueing, speed, and the cue-ball path.

A solution adds the Aiming Ball and track line for one way to play the shot. ICA provides authored solutions, and you can create and save your own. Solutions can be filtered further by follow/draw, English, number of rails, speed, difficulty level, and stop/stun.

  • Thin cuts

Target Practice filter menu with the cut angle set to 60 degrees or more
Filter: cut angle of 60 degrees or more.

Set the cut angle to 60 degrees or more to work on thin cuts from anywhere on the table.

  • Medium to long straight shots

Target Practice filter menu selecting long distances and a cut angle of about zero
Filter: at least 2 diamonds each way, cut angle about 0 degrees.

Combine longer distances with a cut angle of about zero for long straight-in shots.

  • Medium to long stop and stun shots

Target Practice filter menu with longer distances and Stop/Stun checked
Filter: at least 2 diamonds each way, Stop/Stun selected.

Pick solutions marked stop/stun over medium and long distances.

  • Difficult three-rail shots with inside English

Target Practice filter menu with inside English, three rails, and level 3 selected
Filter: inside English, 3 rails, level 3.

Use the solution filters to find demanding position plays: three rails, inside English, difficulty level 3.
